We've tweak our install quite a bit. We're using vBadvanced for the homepage and sideblock features, vbLinks for our Directory, Photopost for our Gallery and we've made certain style and permissions choices to "rope off" certain forums as a psuedo-CMS, with articles, comments, tutorials, etc. With Moderators as Editors, it works quite well. I'm a big proponent of the Reputation system and we're really pushing it hard, adjusting the values as we go. The built-in subscriptions feature is great.
